Japan midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura has decided to retire from international football in the aftermath of the Asian side's elimination in the round of 16.
He said "My next Japan game? There won't be one," the former Celtic star was quoted as saying by Nikkan Sports. "I wanted to leave some mark on this World Cup, but it just wasn't meant to be for me.
"It's weird. It's as if the football gods are testing me. It has been really hard for me to warm the bench for Japan's national side. Me and the World Cup obviously don't go well together. Maybe that's just destiny."
Nakamura made his debut for Japan's national side in the Asia Cup qualifier against Singapore in February 2000. The gifted midfielder has made 98 international appearances in total, scoring 24 goals in the process.
