Six injured in Fan Zone crush

cape town
At least six people have been injured in a crowd crush at Cape Town's main World Cup 'Fan Zone' on Thursday when thousands of fans attempted to get into the venue.

Cape Town's historic Grand Parade - where Nelson Mandela delivered his first speech as a free man after his release from prison in 1990 - was closed for a short while, although the incident has now been contained.

City spokesman, Pieter Cronje, said: "People were anxious to get in and just surged ahead. Fortunately it was a contained incident and calm was restored quickly."

At least 15 people were injured last Sunday when fans tried to force their way into a match between Nigeria and North Korea, causing a gate to collapse.

Meanwhile, two people were injured at a World Cup concert in Cape Town according to South African television station E-TV.

Fans trying to enter the arena - which had been limited to a capacity of 17,000 - to see the likes of singer R.Kelly, attempted to get into the event and the rush saw one policeman and one fan hurt.
