Three members of the Greek national team were robbed at their hotel in Durban.

Three members of the Greek national team have been robbed while out training with the team, according to reports emanating from the Greece camp in Durban, South Africa.

Angelos Charisteas, Sotiris Ninis, and Giorgios Samaras returned to their hotel rooms on Thursday to discover they had been robbed a combined total of approximately €2000.

Greek television station SKAI TV was the first to report the situation from the Beverley Hills Hotel in Durban, as Greece staff reported the situation to police after the discovery was made by the players.

Despite the intrusion, Greece aren’t making a big deal of the situation as the squad continues its preparation for their World Cup opener against South Korea on June 12.

"In our opinion, this is not such a big deal," said Greece's press official Michalis Tsapidis. "This incident is something that could happen anywhere in the world, not just here in South Africa."

South Africa Police colonel Vish Naidoo confirmed the Hellenic Football Federation has declined to press charges.

“They refused to open a case but we have sent a high-level delegation of detectives to interview them and try to pursue an investigation,” said Naidoo.

It’s not the first time that robberies have occurred in South Africa, with numerous high-profile break-ins being reported in recent weeks.

The Colombian national team were robbed at their hotel in Johannesburg while in town for an international friendly against South Africa last week. Meanwhile, journalists from Spain and Portugal have also been robbed in the past 48 hours; the latter being reported as an armed confrontation.
